Using Sodium Alginate for Microorganism Immobilization
Project Overview: The customer had a need to increase production rates for their viable cells to be immobilized via encapsulation in a porous, alginate micro-bead for a food application. This micro-bead was also subsequently coated with enteric coatings for survival through the stomach.
AVEKA Solution: AVEKA conducted lab research and development to perfect the formulation. formulation. Then on request from the customer, the efforts were shifted to making as narrow a particle size distribution of spherical beads only several microns in size. Using a method exclusive to AVEKA, production rates were much higher than standard drip casting methods. AVEKA employed bead-making expertise coupled with a strong partnership and project communication in order to achieve a satisfactory prototype at rates that would be superior to those previously capable.
